Devo:

DEVO

Almost 20 years after first appearing in their yellow jumpsuits and "flower-pot" hats, Devo is still making music together. The band has simply chosen other, more subversive, ways to get their music to the masses -- they do soundtracks and commercials. Devo took their act on the road a few summers back as they headlined a handful of shows on the Lollapalooza tour. They will come together to perform a few dates, each year, depending on the offer and situation.

Devo formed in Akron, Ohio in 1972. They were new wave's, first, most successful band! Their huge single "Whip It," with the help of MTV made them a cult sensation. Two Kent State art students Jerry Casale and Mark Mothersbaugh named the band after the phrase "de-evolution." They believed that instead of evolving, mankind has actually regressed, as evidenced by the problems and herd mentality of American society. Their music was supposedly a mirror of this view and their vision of society were of a rigid, repressive, and mechanical world and they interpreted this through their music through jerky, robotic rhythms, and their obsession with technology and electronics.
